I don't know if I've got the right end of the stick here - can someone put my mind at ease?
Say... I start GW2, and make a Sylvari character because I think they look kinda cool. I play the game, get to HoM, and lo! I am (somehow) a descendant of my GW1 char, and I have (customised?) access to their monuments/whatever.
What happens if I then decide that I don't actually like playing as a Sylvari after all, and decide to delete it and make an Asura instead? Is everything in my HoM still tied to/customised for/somehow attached to my deleted Sylvari?
The devs probably haven't even finalised how that works yet.
My thoughts on the mini pets - Anet had to find some way of preventing people from registering pets in the HoM and then passing them around to entire guilds / selling them afterwards. I don't believe the solution is perfect, account based mini pet customisation would be better. Or better still, a zookeeper / toymaker NPC. I'd love to be able to copy my Kuunie and give her to other characters in GW2 if I can. As long as they are customised and untradeable I don't see how this could be an issue for A.net.
As for the rest of it.. .well I guess I'm in a minority, but it's pretty much working how I expected it to.
Oh, not keen on the fact that the armours seem to be a bit indiscriminate. I'd like to guarantee that Saraphim's descedent won't be looking at a male version of her Vabbbi / Luxon / Primeval etc ...
I honestly don't feel it matters soo much that everything get's customised. The Hall of Monuments is a vanity thing. Ok, so it unlocks items in GW:2...so if you want to keep everything un-customised, just leave the building of the Hall of Monuments until just before GW:2 comes out. Strikes me ANet may want to make some changes to the hall before then anyway.
Nothing to get too concerned about at this moment in time I think.
I'm in the HoM right now and the "Honor" monument allows you to display your PvP titles (Hero, Gladiator, Champ). They won't respond till you get Rank 9 (or 12 for hero)!
Is this how it is going to be all the time? What if someone has rank 3 or rank 6 hero, will that incrue any bonuses when the thing goes live? If not that is a bit nasty.
i am troubled by this aswell, the armor and titles are fine IMO though. i dont mind if each of my characters has different title monuments but i prefer my monk to have acess to survivor because titles werent invented back when he was born.
The mini pets thing is my main concern, i understand that people could just trade them so why not have them customised to the account. similar to hat maker or tournament account name schemes...
If someone sold theres afterwards i dont see any problems, if someone wants the full respect or whatever they would keep there minipet and show it off that way as for titles aswell.
The armour i dont mind at all but ive heard it gives a random character thats not gender....is there a way of making the monument look exactly like your character
What were they thinking making it character based anyway... You are able to show your progress to friends, but do you really think my friends will want to visit the monuments of all my 12 characters??? I don't think so. If I wanted to see someones achievements (or my own), I wanted to see them all gathered in ONE big monument, with ALL my pets, minipets, PvE titles, unique weapons and armours. Sort them out so all your character's names are in there, with their achievements linked to them, but still all in one place.
I also want to be able to keep switching my minipets over characters. Make em account customized, not character customized...
You wanted to create something to make all the hardcore players happier? You just succeeded in making em all furious... again... way to go Anet.
One word of advice: make it account based before GW:EN launches.
The mini pet thing is disappointing to say the least.
From how it is described the tradability of mini pets just went out the window. I thought that was the whole drive behind them, to have some fun thing to trade around. So what if someone gives their pets to a friend to put in the HoM. So what if people trade around to get the complete set of pets. What really disappoints me is that I can't even share them with my own characters.
I really think Anet needs to rethink the tying of mini pets to one character. It would be different if any mini pet you ever owned would show and those were in the HoM but to have to physically place one in and have it forever customized to that character is a big let down.
With this implementation you guys have killed the tradability of one of the things in this game that should be most traded. People should be able to "share" them with their friends, share them with all of the characters in an account, trade them for other pets after putting them into their HoM, sell them after putting them into their HoM, or what ever else they want to do with them.
A-net please readjust this after this weekend or durring.
I don't want to derail the convo, but the miniatures were not principally designed with "market" in mind. Yes, there is a market. Yes, we care about that and we take care to protect it. But if we mess with the market, that's less critical, I believe, than messing with people's enjoyment of an element that, for some, is a very important part of the game.
So I'd say "maintaining people's enjoyment of minis" is higher in importance than "maintaining the marketability of said item"
But I'm not the one who decides, so your points are well taken.
so wasn't taken for market in mind . .. then why make some mini pets in such limited numbers that you just know they're going to be sold?
heck, so far I've spent around 4000 ectos on my mini pet collection over the past 15 months and I'm still missing 5 of them.
I really hope there's some way to share the minis across other characters if we do indeed add them to the HoM. As it is now, they're just going to stay in my storage and not even go near the HoM.
I'm not talking about the sell ability of mini pets but the ability of players to trade them.
For example I have am mini Shiro but I'd like a mini Titan. My friend has a Titan and wants a Shiro. We both want the complete set in our HoM. If it wasn't like it is now we could trade after adding the mini to HoM. With things the way they are now that is impossible.
The ability of players to be able to freely trade amongst themselves would be a more enjoyable than the current system. If they were left uncustomized they would become like trading cards. I have this mini I don't really like buy if I want the whole set I should put it in and trade it to someone else who needs it for another mini I don't have.
That is what I'm talking about I could care less about the mini pet market.

As Gale stated, the customization was implemented to keep players from doing exactly that: swapping mini pets about until you have the complete set in your HoM removing any sense of achievement from the mini-pet trophy room entirely.
HoM should be for items that are customized ONLY or there is no point to it at all. If I could just borrow every item from friends to fill my space, what would be the point of it?
However, I agree that armor sets should display exactly the ones you own; mini customization should be tied to your account name, not character; include PvE titles (their omission would be ridiculous) and there should be a trophy case with a certain amount of free space in which to put any item you wish. This way we could all display our favorite weapons + their stats and others players would get a proper sense of our achievements.
I wouldn't worry about this too much, most of the changes suggested here seem to be quite obviously for the better and half of the reason for the preview is for Anet to browse feedback and revise aspects. I'm sure we'll see improvements soon.
Gj so far though, I'm very impressed with what I've seen of EoTN. It's by no means perfect, but we have the base of something very cool here. Hats of to Anet I say

im speaking strictly about passing on stuff, not adding to hom.
the idea of taking a mini-pet and customizing it to an account is fine and dandy with me (it should be the same with weapons also...imo).
However the problem comes when you get to GW2.
You used 1 Kuunavang to unlock Kuunavang for all 10 characters (under your proposal).
Would the GW2 descendant get 1 Kuunavang or 10? If theres only going to be one copy passed along anyway, whats the point in adding it to the other 9 HoMs?
Uh oh, that made sense...
Even so, why reduce something that any character could use into only something one of your characters can? And for some unspecified bonus we have no idea about???
Everyone who puts hard work into something likes to either display that hard work or put their name/emblem/tag on their work. It isn't narcissistic, it's pride and happiness in their sense of accomplishment.
For example (my assumptions):
- an artist will either put their name or registered mark on their work(s) and if they have multiple pieces, they'll display/showcase them in a gallery or even a book (ie "Art of Guild Wars" books found in collector's editions of the game)
- a car collector will typically have the vehicles housed in the same place/showroom and they need not ever be driven, some like them simply for looks and nothing more
- baseball card/ball/glove collection which may or may not be signed by the player(s) also displayed together if one owns multiples
- collectors of pennies, dolls, action figures, rocks, shells, etc like to usually keep their 'collections' or accomplishments in one place to display
- collector's of GW memorabilia would obviously display it in one spot and not switch between displaying different items on the wall/bookcase etc if they have multiples
Why? Why would someone that owns or creates all these things think of displaying them from the same place? Simply because they're proud, that's why. There is something that they love so they go out and get it. Something that makes them happy, so they go out and find it. Time matters not. Perhaps money matters not. All that matters is that they -enjoy- it and like to share that enjoyment with others. Not piece by piece, but all at once, their great joy.
Some may ask, what is the difference of having individual HoM's vs. an account based HoM? My response, if someone were to view only one of my character's HoM's, then they would only see a fraction of the joy I've had in playing Guild Wars. Some characters are more bare than others in achievements, that's because some are older/younger and another reason is because I like variety. I have 10 characters at the moment and I like to play them all for different reasons. Mostly, it depends on how I feel. What motivates me that day, what interests me, or something I simply enjoy. Seeing the accomplishments of all of my characters in one place would give me a sense of pride for my accomplishments of 2+ years, happiness, it would keep me motivated and eager to play. I can easily see which character(s) have more things accomplished and thus, try to catch up with those that hold less accomplishments. A personal motivator, in that regard. If the HoM was account based, it would be easier to hop between multiple friends HoM's as well, that is another motivator. Besides people having self-pride in accomplishments, there is also our competitive spirit between friends. Maybe friends starting a title at the same time and having fun seeing which can attain it first.
I like to gain titles to show as an accomplishment. More than those though, I believe I love my mini-pets. Some people say they're totally useless so why waste inventory space. I collect and love them simply because I think they're cute and they make me happy. Asking me to chose which mini-pet to be customized to a certain character and I wouldn't be able to, I'd have to say then...that you will never see my mini-pets displayed in the HoM's, so it's best you just erase that feature for me. I guess my mini-pets will remain in my Xunlai Storage forever.
I believe that the HoM should be account based because it is a reflection of my pride and joy in my Guild Wars accomplishments or things that I love about this game. Please note, that I am not stating anything to do with descendants inheriting any or all titles/items/weapons/armor etc of all of my current characters. I merely speak on how I would prefer things to be displayed, and that is for all character achievements to be housed in one HoM's. That would make me happy, aid in my motivation to accomplish more, and keep me playful and competitive with others. Basically because if we aren't motivated or don't enjoy something, we tend to..well..stop doing it. Those are just some of my preliminary thoughts on the matter.
Superb post which says it all really. Looking at Gailes response it seems anet don't want an account based monument for fear of people being able to create a horde of "super characters" with 10 million title bonuses in gw2..
Why not have an account based hall but allow players to select x number of titles from their hall to carry when creating a character? This would allow people to create 'direct descendants' if they so wanted by creating a character directly using the titles of a GW1 character, or allow others to create characters how they wish from their title tracks. Items/weapons could simply be limited by profession (need a warrior for any warrior weapon/armour bonus).
As Gale stated, the customization was implemented to keep players from doing exactly that: swapping mini pets about until you have the complete set in your HoM removing any sense of achievement from the mini-pet trophy room entirely.
What "achievement" you get them as birthday presents there are only 3 or 4 that were given as rewards and the rest were promo gifts.
As far as the pokemon reference, well so what. They are/were a tradable item to collect now people will not want to trade around highly desired minis because then they will not be able to add them to their set.
Like I said A-net has killed the tradability of minis. Which affects nothing for you anti "pokemon" traders.

I dunno if this has been mentioned yet, but what about those of us who enjoy having mixed armor sets? For instance my Warrior has 15K Kurz Chest+Pants mixed with 15K SS Gloves+Boots and a 15K Ascalon Helm.... And yet I can't display this armor set at all, and would be forced to buy the other pieces of the sets to register the fact that he has these armor pieces at all... And he's not my only mixed armor character either. I would hope this could be remedied before the game's release.
All I'm saying is that I would like to keep minis tradable.
Dont put them in HoM then
And i might be wrong, but Anet have not gone on record and said what we get for filling up HoM with our current equipment etc. I get the impression that the large majority of people on here have taken it upon themselves to assume that they will get mega bonuses when starting GW2. It could be that you'll actually get naff all that aids you in gameplay terms.... or if you do (and here's a random idea) you'll only get it when you reach a certain stage of the game ( a game thats still 2+ years away so lets all calm down a bit eh?) when it doesnt give you any benefit over the rest of the players.
just my opinion but then i'm bored as hell at work

What "achievement"? The achievement of obtaining a complete set by earning enough gold to buy them and having the patience to trade until your set is complete.
If you want your items to stand testament in your hall, then why should you be able to trade them afterwards?
MAYBE there should be the option to un-customized your pet that also removes its trophy from your hall. That way if you decide you want to sell you can without retaining a trophy for something you don't own any more.

Don't care about GW2, don't think because I have complete collection of minis I'll be a god in GW2 either.

There in lies the rub. If everyone wants to put them in their HoM then there will be none to trade. Trade is the word here not sell or buy.
So if I delete the mini for starage space will it still be in my HoM and if so how is that diffeerent from trading, selling or giving it away.
